COLLECTORS RODS Many (perhaps most) of the rods
owned or connected to famous anglers have been sold through auction, and now
grace prized collections. This short list comprises the few rods and items of
tackle that are (or might be) currently available. It is not intended that these
rods should be generally open for viewing or inspection. They are available
only to known collectors, and those with whom we have an established
connection. Bernard Venables. Craftversa 11’0” /2 All split cane reverse taper general coarse rod.
Bernard’s favourite rod design, and one often seen in photographs of him.
This is one of a small number made by Edward Barder in the mid 1990’s, with
Bernard Venables’ approval. Signed in Indian ink by Bernard Venables.
Original stopper and labelled bag. Virtually unused. (Edward now, quite properly, asks £850 for
his ordinary production coarse rods.) Price on application SOLD Maurice
Ingham Coxon & Waterman 1995
The Maurice Ingham Carp net The
subject of an article in the magazine CarpWorld. Only about 25 Coxon and
Waterman nets were made in one size or another, of which 20 were carp-sized.
This is one of the original small batch that were signed by Maurice Ingham. The article in CarpWorld shows Maurice signing the
nets. £950 (Names can be retained for any that come up for sale).

photograph of similar net. Peter Stone. Fred J. Taylor Roach Rod 12’6” / 2 plus handle. Hollow built butt.
General coarse rod, particularly favoured by Chris Yates as a barbel rod. One
of a pair made by Chapmans for Peter Stone. Restored by Barder in 1995 to an
amazing standard, and much approved-of by Peter Stone when he later inspected
the completed rod at a Golden Scale Club meeting. Unused since restoration.
Price on application Peter Stone. Chapman 500 10’0” /2 Mk IV Avon type. One of the several rods given
to Peter Stone by Chapmans at the time when they were making his Legerstrike
design, and he was working for them in a consulting capacity. Signed by Peter in Indian ink. Basic
restoration completed, with Peter’s approval. Price on application SOLD Peter
Stone. Mk IV Carp. 10’0” /2 The subject of an article in CarpWorld,
where there is a photograph of Peter with the rod. The blanks for this rod
were given to Peter Stone by Richard Walker. Peter then completed the rod himself.
Peter believed that the Walker had arranged for the blanks to be supplied by
B.James, although he did not know for certain. Signed by Peter in Indian ink.
Original ferrule re-fitted in 1994 with Peter’s approval: otherwise it is all
original, and untouched . Price on application SOLD Joe
Taylor. One of the famous Taylor brothers.
Original legend reads ‘Made Especially For Mr. Joe Taylor.’ Mk IV Avon 10’0”
Made by Chubbs of Edgeware. Date unknown. Finely made, with nickel silver
ferrule. No provenance, but looks entirely honest. £750 SOLD Richard
Walker. Mk. IV Carp. Signed in Indian ink by Richard Walker. Seen by several experts who acknowledge that this is
a proper Walker rod. Original owner unknown, but from the 1950’s the rod was
owned by an angler from Leighton Buzzard (close to the Walker heartland).
They appear to be Southwell blanks (like many of the Walker rods) constructed
to the original tapers. Signature and butt whips (faded gold tipped with brown) retained,
the rest stripped for restoration. Three of the original agate-lined rings were on the rod, and these have been
retained for use. Shows all the usual Walker rod traits, and identifying
features. Price on application |
